Dr. Marilyn Frey recently made a generous donation to the Horizon Health Foundation that will greatly impact patients seeking care in the urology department.
Dr. Frey’s donation supported the purchase of a new scope for a morcellator device, which is used by the urology department in prostate surgeries to efficiently break down and remove large prostate tissue to be sent to pathology. Ultimately, this tool will benefit patients by allowing them to receive this care close to home.
Dr. Michael Shanks, urologist at Horizon Health, trained with Dr. Marcelino Rivera, MD, at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, Indiana to perfect this procedure. As of August 2024, Dr. Shanks has completed three procedures with the new equipment. The goal is to use the morcellator in procedures with patients who have prostate glands larger than 80 grams in size. Previously, patients seeking treatment would be referred for treatments elsewhere.
“We are so thankful for Dr. Frey and her help,” Dr. Shanks said. “This tool will improve quality of life in our community.”
