Horizon Health Foundation Awards Healthcare Scholarships

The Horizon Health Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2024 healthcare scholarships. These “next generation healthcare heroes” were honored at a July 26 luncheon at Horizon Health.

“These scholarships not only invest in individual growth, but also contribute to the betterment of the communities we serve,” said Randi Bohannon, Horizon Health Foundation Executive Director. “They demonstrate our belief in the potential of these recipients to make a profound impact on the lives they will touch.”

Over the past four years, the Foundation has awarded $18,500 to 25 scholarship recipients.

The 2024 scholarship winners are:

Doc Acklin Healthcare Scholarship

One $1,000 scholarship was awarded to a Paris Cooperative High School graduating senior who embodies the character traits of the late Dr. James Acklin (scholastic ability, participation in athletics, and character).

  • Aubree Leader, Paris, will be a nursing major at Danville Area Community College.

Dr. Leland Phipps Memorial Scholarship

A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to a Horizon Health employee to further his or her education in the healthcare field.

  • Zoe Sanders, Paris, is an ER Technician in the Horizon Health Emergency Department and will be a psychology major on a pre-medicine track at Indiana State University this fall.

Foundation Board EMT Scholarship

Two $900 scholarships were awarded to cover the cost of an EMT-Basic certification course at Horizon Health.

  • Margaret York, Paris, will complete the EMT course during fall 2024 and will be a nursing major at Ivy Tech Community College in spring 2025.
  • Samantha Pritts, Palestine, will complete the EMT course during fall 2024 and will work at Walmart Pharmacy in Robinson.

Nursing Foundation Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships were awarded to students who are currently enrolled in, or have been accepted into, a nursing program.

  • Michelle Wymer, Marshall, is a certified medical assistant at Horizon Health and is a nursing major at Ivy Tech Community College.
  • Alicia Marvin, Chrisman, is a certified nursing assistant at Horizon Health and is a nursing major at Lake Land College.

Paris Community Hospital Volunteers’ Scholarship

The Paris Community Hospital Volunteers, a separate organization from the Foundation, awarded two $1,000 scholarships.

  • Piper Knight, Chrisman, Paris Cooperative High School Scholarship recipient.
  • Brittany Scott, Paris, currently works for Horizon Health as secretary in the orthopedics department.
