Betsy Marvin, of Chrisman, one of several to receive nursing honor
Registered nurse Betsy Marvin, of Chrisman, and her Horizon Health coworkers have received top honors for their outstanding patient care.
During an October 28 ceremony at the hospital, the medical/surgical team was presented the prestigious Daisy Award. The national recognition is presented to nurses who provide extraordinary patient care, going above and beyond the call of duty.
The Daisy Award recognizes the nursing team's compassion and resilience during a time of surging hospital admissions and challenging patient medical conditions.
“Over the last few months, I have witnessed humanity at its best,” Betsy said. “There wasn't a single day that I felt I was alone in this fight. Not only did we support one another, but the outpouring of support from our surrounding communities meant more to us that we could ever put into words.”
The award nomination explained why the medical/surgical team deserved the award. The following examples came from patients, fellow employees, and hospital leaders:
- One nurse, with tears in her eyes, recalled her colleagues holding a patient’s hand stating, “I am here for you. I am not going anywhere.”
- Someone responded, “I have never seen such commitment and love for the job they do. This staff loves their patients and each other.”
- Nursing staff never said, “I can’t do this. That is not my job.” Instead, they said, “Show me; teach me. We got this. I can do it.”
- Many staff worked additional 12-hour shifts, often unable to eat lunch or take breaks because of their commitment to patients and each other.
- A nurse traveled via ambulance to a faraway location to ensure an intubated patient received the best possible care. “I started with them and wanted to end with them, no matter what. That patient needed me and I needed them to be okay. It was up to me to make sure that happened.”
“Many days we left work not understanding why all of this was happening,” Betsy explained. “But we knew God was in control and that everything would be all right. If I had to do this all over again, there isn't a single person I could imagine doing without. I am so proud to be a part of the Horizon Health team.”
Betsy has been a Horizon Health employee for five years. She has worked on the medical/surgical unit, special care unit, and COVID unit.
