Oakland Clinic Offers Physicals for CDL Drivers

The Oakland Clinic, a service of Horizon Health, is now providing required medical exams for motorists who possess a commercial driver’s license (CDL).

Casey Anderson, family nurse practitioner, provides the exams as a nationally certified medical examiner. She is listed as a provider on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, an initiative of the US Department of Transportation (DOT). This means that she has completed federal requirements to perform DOT-certified physicals for CDL drivers.

“The Oakland Clinic is a convenient location for local agriculture employees who need this service without having to leave the community,” Anderson said.

The DOT physical is a complete physical exam. It includes a review of the person’s health history, identifies any chronic conditions and prescribed medications, and involves vision and hearing screenings.

DOT Requirements

Since May 21, 2014, motorists who possess a CDL must be examined by a medical professional listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. The physical is required every two years, or less, depending on the person’s health history.

In addition to the Oakland Clinic, Horizon Health also provides DOT exams at its Occupational Health Clinic in Paris, as well as full occupational health services – drug testing, pre-employment physicals, injury clinic, and more.

A CDL is required in the United States to operate any type of vehicle that weighs more than 26,000 pounds for commercial use, a vehicle that transports hazardous materials, and a vehicle that is designed to transport 16 or more passengers. This includes, but is not limited to, tow trucks, tractor trailers, and buses.
