Doctors Team Up to Provide Treatment for Vascular Disease

Drs. Philip Holloway and Syed Hussain are teaming up to offer comprehensive care for patients suffering from peripheral vascular diseases (PVD) through a new program at Paris Community Hospital. Initiatives of this program will be coordinated through the PCH Wound & Limb Salvage Center.

Peripheral vascular diseases are circulation disorders that affect blood vessels outside of the heart and brain. Complications of the disease are the third leading cause of death in the US.

Limb salvage is the process of returning a limb (arm or leg) to functionality after a condition that might otherwise result in amputation, such as severe trauma or vascular blockage, has affected that part of the body.

Dr. Holloway is a podiatrist and wound care specialist. He started the PCH Wound Center in 2006, which was the first of its kind in the Wabash Valley. He sees many patients in his practice who suffer from, or are at risk of developing, PVD.

“We have a high number of patients in our community who are diabetic,” said Dr. Holloway. “Many of them come to my office for care of their feet and wounds. During that process, it is not uncommon for symptoms of vascular disease to come up.”

While diabetes is not the only cause of vascular disease, the two often correlate. Other causes of PVD include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, infection, coronary artery disease, and injury to extremities.

“Dr. Hussain and his team differ from other physicians in their treatment of vascular blockages because they perform necessary diagnoses—as well as corrective treatments—all at one time,” said Dr. Holloway. “What is often done in two or more procedures, his team does in one setting. This relationship also helps give our patients quicker access to the treatment they need.”

Dr. Hussain is a vascular surgeon, affiliated with the Vein and Vascular Center at Christie Clinic in Champaign, who has been coming to PCH as a visiting physician since June 2014. He and his colleagues are the only vascular surgery group south of Chicago (in Illinois) participating in many cutting-edge vascular trials, bringing the latest technology and therapies to central and eastern Illinois. These include TriVascular Technologies’ Least Invasive Fast-Track EVAR (LIFE) study and a second study evaluating the effectiveness of drug-coated angioplasty balloon technology.

“From what I’ve seen in my practice thus far, I honestly think there is a market for this here. In many cases, it is very time-sensitive,” said Hussain, “and everything can be done right here [PCH].”

Patients can have their office visits, testing, and lab work done at PCH. Travel to Dr. Hussain’s Champaign location is only necessary if a procedure is needed.
